STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, ESKOM HOLDINGS LIMITED

THE BOARD OF ESKOM HOLDINGS APPOINTS A NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Thursday, 08 February 2007 – The Board of Eskom Holdings Limited
is pleased to announce that Cabinet yesterday endorsed its
recommendation to appoint Mr Jacob Maroga, currently Managing Director,
Transmission Division, as the Chief Executive Designate of Eskom. This
decision of Cabinet was announced to Eskom senior management this
morning by the Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Alec Erwin. Mr Maroga will replace Mr Thulani Gcabashe who has served two terms as
Chief Executive. At the time of accepting the second term in 2004, Mr
Gcabashe indicated that he would not be available to extend his
contract, which expires at the end of 2007.

Mr Maroga was the unanimous recommendation of the board after an eight
month selection process. More than 270 candidates were identified.
After an intense selection process, five candidates were short listed
for a through assessment by the search committee. Notwithstanding the superb calibre of the internal and external
candidates, Mr Maroga was deemed the leader best equipped to take Eskom
through the exciting years ahead during which Eskom will be investing
heavily in new capacity. He has clearly demonstrated his technical and
management skills under the challenging circumstances of the recent
past. I have no doubt that this will be a popular appointment for Eskom
employees and customers alike. Jacob Maroga joined Eskom in 1995 as the Distribution Technology
Manager. After service two years (1998-2000) as the Engineering Manager
in the Northern and North Eastern Regions of Distribution, he was then
appointed to the Executive Committee as Managing Director, Distribution
Division in September 2000. In 2003, Mr Maroga was appointed the
Managing Director, Transmission Division.
